Inaugural Posting

Welcome, welcome, fannishly-intrigued people.

Let’s start with the basics: I’m Fandomfan, and I’m a fangirl.  *room says ‘Hi, Fandomfan’*

I have been and will quite likely always be a fangirl.

I’ve been known to get fannish about books and movies and tv shows, but in a larger way, I’m fannish about fandom in general.  I like thinking and talking and writing about what makes fan communities form and how they operate and what they’re like, particularly in our digital, online age.

This is not going to be a blog of recs or squee or hate, and it’s not going to be a place where I just talk up my current fandom(s) and talk down others.  It’s more of a place to post my anthropological/sociological thoughts about fandom and fannish culture in a more general sense, though references to various specific fandoms will pretty certainly show up here.  And hopefully a place where you feel comfortable posting your own thoughts in response.

I can get pretty cynical and pessimistic about online communities, and that’ll show up here.  But I can also wax rhapsodic about how wonderful fan communities are, and I am very definitely a fangirl to my bones.  So one day’s rant about people substituting online interaction for real-life interaction (that rant will come, I promise) may easily give way to the next day’s rave about just how exciting and vibrant and fulfilling it can be to fall head-first in love with a new fandom (that rave, too, will come).

So I hope to use this as a forum for fannish musings of all sorts.  Come join in the fun.
